Children's Literature for Inquiry

A searchable classroom resource for finding picture books and children's literature that support California History-Social Science themes, inquiry questions, civic learning, and grade-level planning.

Teaching Approach

Picture books can make social studies visible, concrete, and discussable.

Why integrate literature and social studies?

Elementary teachers often face limited time for social studies. Literature can help reclaim that time when books are selected for meaningful historical, geographic, civic, economic, and cultural inquiry rather than used only as language arts enrichment.

Picture books offer visual images, multiple perspectives, concrete examples, and memorable narratives that help students understand people, places, events, identity, power, change, and civic responsibility.

Use inquiry as the filter

The guiding question is not simply whether a book is engaging. Teachers can ask whether the activity has a significant social studies goal, whether students can explain that purpose, and whether the book helps students apply important content or disciplinary thinking.

This catalog is designed to help teachers and students search by theme, California connection, HSS topic, and text evidence so literature supports inquiry instead of replacing it.
