Why integrate literature and social studies?

Elementary teachers often face limited time for social studies. Literature can help reclaim that time when books are selected for meaningful historical, geographic, civic, economic, and cultural inquiry rather than used only as language arts enrichment.

Picture books offer visual images, multiple perspectives, concrete examples, and memorable narratives that help students understand people, places, events, identity, power, change, and civic responsibility.

Use inquiry as the filter

The guiding question is not simply whether a book is engaging. Teachers can ask whether the activity has a significant social studies goal, whether students can explain that purpose, and whether the book helps students apply important content or disciplinary thinking.
